Longevity, projection and sillage: the performance vocabulary
Long-lasting does not always mean loud, and loud does not always mean luxurious. Understanding the three dimensions of performance makes it easier to choose a fragrance that suits both the wearer and the room.

Three different questions
Longevity asks whether the fragrance can still be perceived after time has passed. Projection asks how far it radiates at a particular moment. Sillage describes the scented trail that remains as the wearer moves. A perfume may project strongly for an hour and then settle close to skin for much longer; another may stay perceptible but maintain a controlled radius throughout.
This distinction prevents a common mistake: calling a refined skin scent weak simply because it is not designed to announce itself across a room.
- Longevity: duration of perceptible wear.
- Projection: the scent’s radius at a given moment.
- Sillage: the trail left through movement and air.
- Dry-down: the later stage when the less volatile parts of the composition become more prominent.
Why performance varies
Formula, concentration, dose, spray mechanism, skin condition, fabric, temperature, humidity, airflow, activity and individual perception can all influence a wear test. Concentration labels such as Eau de Parfum describe a product category, but they do not by themselves predict exact performance.
Repeated exposure can also create temporary scent fatigue, making the wearer less aware of a perfume that other people can still notice. For that reason, a fair assessment combines timed self-checks with feedback from another person in the same environment.
How to run a fair wear test
Use the same number of sprays from comparable distances and test one perfume per area. Record the time rather than relying on memory. Check the opening, the heart after the initial volatility settles, and the later dry-down. Repeat on another day before reaching a conclusion.
Test in the setting that matters. An office fragrance should be observed in a close indoor environment; an evening signature should be tested through the movement, temperature and duration of a real evening. Skin and fabric can be compared, but delicate clothing should be tested cautiously because some products can mark fabric.
How to support wear without over-applying
Apply only as directed and avoid irritated or broken skin. A fragrance-free moisturiser may change how a perfume sits on dry skin, but any effect varies and should be tested rather than promised. Reapplying a small amount later can be more considerate than beginning with an excessive cloud in a shared space.
Store perfume upright, closed and away from strong light and repeated temperature swings. Storage protects the product’s stability; it does not transform a weak formula into a powerful one.
