Personalized perfume: what should actually be tailored?
A meaningful personalized perfume should translate choices into a clear creative brief. It should never pretend that a photograph can reveal body chemistry or that an algorithm can replace safety work and a perfumer’s judgement.

Personalization begins with preference, not a scan
People often know more about their desired fragrance than they realise. They may describe a cool white shirt, warm spice after sunset, polished wood, clean skin, a flower they love or a note they never want to smell. A good process turns those reactions into structured information without forcing the client to speak like a perfumer.
The strongest signals are explicit: ranked scent families, firm exclusions, memories, occasions, preferred presence and previous wear experience. These should carry more influence than an image or a demographic detail.
What an image can—and cannot—do
A visible-surface wrist image may describe simple visual conditions such as apparent brightness, contrast or image quality when processed locally on the device. It cannot diagnose skin, measure hydration, detect pH, read hormones, identify allergies or predict a perfume’s chemistry on the wearer.
NASMÉ therefore treats its optional image step as a small, confidence-gated signal. The image is not uploaded in the current pre-launch experience, and the client can continue without it. If image quality is insufficient, it should contribute nothing.
The signals that should shape the brief
Occasion changes the design problem. A fragrance for an office or close meeting may need controlled projection and a clean transition. A wedding, gala or evening event may invite a richer trail. Climate and movement between outdoor warmth and cooled interiors also affect how the wearer experiences the result.
Desired longevity and projection should be asked separately. They are related but not interchangeable, and neither can be guaranteed to an exact hour on every person. The output should be a target profile for formulation and testing, not a promise printed before the perfume exists.
- Ranked attractions: what the client wants most, not just everything they tolerate.
- Absolute exclusions: notes, effects or materials the client refuses.
- Context: climate, office, formal event, dinner, celebration or nightlife.
- Presence: intimate, balanced or commanding projection.
- Wear target: the desired longevity band, clearly described as a target rather than a guarantee.
Why five directions are better than one mysterious answer
A single algorithmic result can hide uncertainty. NASMÉ’s pre-launch Scent Engine instead ranks five creative directions and shows the notes, descriptors and reasons behind each match. The client selects the direction that feels most convincing rather than being told that one invisible calculation knows them perfectly.
This is recommendation, not automated manufacturing. The selected direction becomes a brief for perfumer review. A real formula still requires ingredient-level work, supplier documents, allergen and IFRA review, stability and compatibility testing, and compliance for every market where it will be sold.
What the client should receive
A premium bespoke service should make the handover understandable: the chosen direction, intended atmosphere, principal note architecture, performance target, bottle size, personalization and price. It should also state what remains subject to evaluation and what happens before production.
The finished fragrance should be accepted because it smells right in controlled wear trials—not because an AI score looked impressive. Technology can improve the brief; craftsmanship, testing and honest communication determine the product.
